The 2026 Hill Climb, held in memory of Chris Boulton, was blessed with a lovely summer’s evening. Chris, who died in January, was Chief Executive of Greenham Trust for many years and is a past president of Newbury Road Club.

The event was closely contested with an excellent number of competitors and a great turnout of spectators near the top of Warlbury Hill, where riders were heralded by a loud bell!

Many thanks to Chris’ wife Jennifer for supporting the event and presenting the prizes. Many of our Newbury Road Club members who came long to ride and support were especially pleased to meet the family and bring back some happy memories.

Good conditions on the course, apart from an annoying headwind in places, contributed to some fast times. Notably there were three juniors racing all putting in excellent times, with Luca Meir (14 years old) in 00:15:38, Frank Edwards (15 years old) in 00:17:59, and Jack Calvert (17 years old) in 00:15:35.

Thanks also to Chris’ son Arthur Boulton for riding and posting a great time. Congratulations to Andrew Edwards (father) and Frank Edwards (son) with Andrew beating his son by just 1 second.

The winner of the open event was Charlie Salt from Newbury Velo in 15:10, in second place was Luke Walton from Elevare RT in 00:15:19, and in third place was Jack Calvert in 00:15:35.

We had a good turnout of female riders this year, and the winner of the fastest female prize was Mireille Cook from Newbury Velo in 00:17:16.
