It seemed like a good idea at the time. It turned out to be an inspiration!
The idea of a Newbury Road Club trip to Mallorca was first floated in August 2022. “Will there be enough interest?” one or two asked. Within hours, 20 members had signed up and within days that number had doubled. Ultimately 40+ members departed Newbury on a chilly late April morning, bound for Port de Pollença, one of the cycling destinations of Europe.
Suffice to say, it was a resounding success. Riders of every speed and ability enjoyed group riding, around the coastal roads, lanes and switchbacks of the Balearic Isle. Gold and Navy merged with the thousands of cyclists who travel to the island every year – that number swelled even more by attendees of the epic 312km island sportive being held the day after we all departed.
Every Club member brings something special to each of our events and this excursion proved no exception. It was a pleasure to be joined by a few non-cycling partners who made the most of relaxation time in the most idyllic of surroundings. You were most welcome.
All riders warmed up with some flat rides and many made it to the iconic Cap Formentor Lighthouse. Some got ‘broken’ by the stunning descent and climb back up to Sa Calobra. And a few hardy souls took on the entire 122km 2400m spine of the island, from Andratx back to our hotel base. Everyone made it back to the bar each evening for good company, conversation and a chance to compare adventures for the following day. In many ways that is what the trip was all about. Quality time with fellow riders and partners. It will definitely be repeated next year!
Pictures paint more than words, so enjoy our Mallorca Gallery below. Huge thanks to members, Chris Matthews for the inspiration and Dave Lilllystone for the organisation. We are also grateful to Stuart Hall Cycling, our hosts at Playa Mar Hotel and to Barnes Coaches for outstanding ground transport on both legs. And of course, to our members who came, cycled and make our Club what it is.
Salud!
