On Sunday 22 June, Newbury Road Club marked a momentous milestone – 100 years of cycling – with a vibrant and joyful celebration at Hermitage Village Hall. More than 100 members and guests gathered to honour a century of Club spirit, shared rides and enduring friendships.
The day began with a light-hearted cycling treasure hunt, which saw teams of riders solving a series of clues that led them through the West Berkshire countryside and ultimately to the venue itself, a nod to the Club’s love of challenge, camaraderie and a good bit of fun on two wheels.

The celebrations hit full speed at the hall. Guests were treated to an impressive spread of food and live music from Heliotrope Pyjama, featuring two Club members, Mark Bishop and Stuart Hutchins, a fitting reminder of the Club's talent both on and off the bike.

In a heartfelt speech, our Chair Lorraine Murrell paid tribute to generations of riders who have shaped the club’s story, honouring past cycling greats. She also extended heartfelt thanks to the many individuals who had contributed to making 2025 such a special year for NRC, especially Dave Glenn for his stewardship of the Centenary programme, Dave Appleton for his work on the Newbury Cycling Festival and Dave Portwood for his work on the Centenary exhibition.

An emotional high point came when three of the club’s longest-serving members, Jeff Garner, Brian Tate and Bob Lyle were invited to cut a special centenary cake. Cleverly decorated as an NRC centenary jersey, the cake was a symbolic centrepiece — a sweet tribute to the Club’s proud identity and enduring legacy.

It was a day that perfectly captured the essence of Newbury Road Club: not just a cycling group, but a community built on shared passion, camaraderie and a joy of cycling.
As the club pedals into its second century, our milestone celebration stands as a powerful reminder of where the Club all began — and just how far we’ve come!
