NRC rides out to meet Hungerford’s French Twin!

On Friday 23 May, seven intrepid cyclists from the Velo Club of Ligueil, Hungerford's twin town for 45 years, arrived in West Berkshire having taken three days to cycle the route.

In England, they were met en route and guided to Hungerford by a group of Newbury Road Club cyclists led by NRC member Keith Mayes, who has twice previously cycled to Ligueil from Hungerford.

Navigating the final route from the coast to Hungerford was challenging due to numerous road closures. Still, at 16.00, all arrived safe and well outside Hungerford Town Hall, for photographs and a formal welcome from the Mayor and Constable of Hungerford. This was followed by a drinks reception at the Community Hub and later a dinner with members of the twinning association at the John O' Gaunt pub.

The French visitors greatly valued the assistance and friendship of the NRC riders and extended an open invitation for them to make the return trip.

As part of its 100-year celebrations, Newbury Road Club are taking a group to Newbury’s Twin Town, Eeklo in Belgium this October, though a trip to Ligueil could be on the radar!
