Learning vital skills to give emergency assistance when the unexpected happens: 12 Club members attended a First Aid Training course on Saturday March 28th.

The Course, entitled "Emergency First Aid at Work" was given by professional trainer, Karen Anderson. Special emphasis, in this all-day session, was given to cycling-related injuries.
As we cover hundreds or even thousands of bike-miles per week across our club activities, there's always a chance for mishaps to occur, whether to ourselves or to members of the public. We have to be ready to deal with emergencies at any time and to ensure that our Ride Leaders and members are best equipped to look after immediate injuries as well as the safety of the casualty and the group at the roadside.

The course covered a wide range of incidents from minor to major including resuscitation, choking, seizures, wounds and bleeding. It included some very realistic role play situations designed to give confidence to respond in real-life circumstances. It also covered the use of AED defibrillator equipment which is designed not to require training in advance. But we're all pleased to know that we have friends on hand who have practised in less-stressed situations.
Key first aid training provides essential life-saving skills, focusing on the 3 Ps:
Preserving life - starting with clearing airways
Preventing further injury - looking after the patient and the rest of the group
Promoting recovery
