Riccione Delivers Another Unforgettable Week

Spectacular rides, incredible food and new friendships made this year’s Italian adventure one to remember.

There was sunshine, sea air, strong coffee, spectacular climbs, and more pasta than most of us care to admit. This year, members of Newbury Road Club returned to the ever-welcoming Hotel Dory on Italy’s Adriatic Coast for another unforgettable week of cycling, friendship, food, and fun.

A fantastic group of 48 members and guests made the trip to Riccione, representing perhaps the widest cross-section of the club we’ve ever had on tour. Riders ranged from regular racers and seasoned climbers to members who simply enjoy steady miles, coffee stops, and exploring quiet lanes at their own pace. That mix is what made the week so special. No matter your speed or ability, there was always a group to ride with and plenty of encouragement along the way.

As ever, our hosts at Hotel Dory looked after us brilliantly. Their expert guides led groups through stunning scenery, from rolling vineyards to some properly testing climbs that left legs aching but spirits high. One of the standout rides of the week was the trip to San Marino, combining spectacular views with the chance to explore one of the world’s oldest republics perched high above the coastline.

Off the bike, the hospitality somehow managed to surpass even the riding. A particular highlight was the decadent barbecue hosted at the family farm of hotel owner Stefano, where members enjoyed incredible local food and sampled his remarkable 33-year-old traditionally made balsamic vinegar. Another memorable afternoon saw us gathered among the olive groves of Emilia-Romagna for a relaxed food and wine tasting as the sun set over the hills. It was Italy at its absolute best.

For many, recovery came courtesy of the Adriatic itself, with plenty of members taking a refreshing post-ride dip in the sea before heading off in search of the ice bath! Meanwhile, a handful of non-cycling guests enjoyed hiking, cookery experiences, boat trips, and other activities arranged by the hotel, proving the trip offers far more than just time in the saddle.

We were also delighted to welcome new faces to the group. Jim Shull travelled all the way from Wisconsin, USA to ride with us, Roland and Zoe joined from France, and Graham and Nigel made the journey all the way from North Hants Cycle Club! Several members had even joined the club specifically for the trip – and after a week like this, it’s easy to see why.

The week finished in energetic fashion with eight members taking on the local Rimini Parkrun on Saturday morning. After a week of climbing, eating, laughing and riding, that felt like a fitting finale.

Trips like these remind us that cycling clubs are about far more than bikes. They create friendships, shared memories, and stories that will be retold for years to come. Huge thanks go to Nicky Meadows and David Lillystone for the enormous effort behind the scenes to make the trip happen.

The club heads to Spain this autumn – and plans are already taking shape for a Spring 2027 adventure. Stay tuned.
