NRC Time Trials welcome many new faces in 2024

Time Trial Report 2024 from Ian Chitty

Newcomer, Abi Dean won the female 10- and 25-mile events

It was an exciting season as we had a number of NRC members riding their first time trials in addition to the usual faces from NRC and other local clubs.   We held around 30 events including the second edition of the Dave Jones Memorial OPEN TT.

We were very pleased to host the Army Cycling Club’s championships within our end-of-season afternoon events.

Andy Laycock retained men’s 10- and 25-mile TTS

Andy Laycock again dominated the men’s Club scene, retaining the men’s 10- and 25-mile time trials, with Ken Brown in second place.  Newcomer, Abi Dean (pictured above) won the female 10- and 25-mile events.

Dan McRobert wins men’s non-aero trophy

Dan McRobert showed great form in winning the men’s non-aero trophy.  Dan also won both the season-long Tate handicap and the 25-mile Smith Handicap.

Ellie Gobey and Peter Fuell won the SPOCO trophies over our sporting courses.

In a break with recent tradition, we held the Club Hill Climb on a Tuesday evening.  This year we used the long course - 4.4 miles from Kintbury to the mast at the top of Walbury Hill.  From NRC, the men’s event was won by Peter Brooke-Wavell with Abi Dean winning the female race.  Jack Calvert deserves an honourable mention for second place overall.

Hopefully, those members who rode their first TTs this season will be back for more next year and will spread the word that it can be fun (in a strange sort of way!) and that the organising team and other riders are very friendly and welcoming.

In addition to the Club events, we again held the Dave Jones Memorial Open TT in May on the H25/1a course from Theale and headquartered at Englefield Village Hall.  This attracted around 60 riders this year.  Once again, Dave’s family were there to present the prizes.

Putting on the events is a real team effort and I would like to thank everybody who helped out, particularly Alan Alewood, Bob Lyle, Richard Byrne, Brian Tate, Trevor Francis and Ray Clark. Gareth Davies took some fantastic action shots.  Claire Emons and Rachael Elliott brought along delicious cakes.  Thanks to you all and everyone else who helped at any of our events.

The next event is our traditional Boxing Day time trial, with the emphasis more on fun rather than all-out racing.  Fancy dress and unusual bikes are encouraged and there will be prizes, mulled wine and mince pies afterwards.  Enter now at https://www.newburyroadclub.co.uk/tt-registration.

We are already planning next season, including the Centenary Edition of the Dave Jones OPEN in May and a full schedule of Club races.  2025 will see the 100-year anniversary of the very first NRC time trial and we are hoping to hold a special Club event to commemorate this.   I hope to see lots of our members joining us.
