100th year of competitive cycling shapes up to be a cracker!

Ian Chitty

It is only two weeks until the Newbury Road Club Time Trial Season kicks off and, as ever, there is plenty of opportunity to write your name into our illustrious history. Each year, local riders surprise themselves, picking up numerous awards, trophies and a sense of personal achievement for having pushed themselves and taken part.

You don’t have to be the fastest on the day to win. With most events age- and gender- graded, and with points competitions and discretionary awards, achievement comes from all areas of cycling. But you have to take part!

Regular Time Trial events every week

We start on Saturday 15 March with a 10-mile warm up Time Trial between Shefford Woodlands and Stockcross. Entries are open here

There are Time Trials the following two Saturdays before we move to our usual Wednesday evening slot on 2 April. We then have events most Wednesday evenings until early September when we finish off the season with four Wednesday afternoons. We also have Bank Holiday Monday races at Easter and in late May and August.

There is something to suit everyone with nine different TT courses ranging from 10- to 25-miles, some flat and some more hilly. We also have our annual Hill Climb from Kintbury to the top of Walbury Hill on Tuesday 17 June. And look out for a special event on Wednesday 2 July when we formally mark 100 years of competitive cycling where riders will compete for the NRC Centenary Trophy.

New for 2025 – Newbury TT Challenge Trophy

A new addition this year is an exciting inter-club time trial competition where Newbury Road Club and Newbury Velo will battle it out over two races, with the winning Club claiming the Newbury TT Challenge Trophy. It would be fantastic to see as many NRC jerseys as possible showing our Club’s competitive spirit. Adjustments will be applied to riders’ times to allow for gender and age differences so that everyone has an equal chance of making the difference. The two events are 11 June and 6 August.

Dave Jones Memorial Open TT  - Honouring a Club legend

In addition to our Club events, we will be hosting the Dave Jones Memorial Open TT on 11 May. We are hoping for even more entrants this year to help make the Centenary event even better than earlier editions. We will be asking for Club volunteers to help with the event so please check your calendar to see if you are free.

There is nothing to be nervous about – you’re riding against yourself

You do not need to be a professional to enjoy racing your bike. Pushing yourself in a competitive environment is a great way to improve your fitness at the same time as having fun. And there is nothing to be afraid of - the TT team is really friendly and there is always a social coffee and cake afterwards. Come and give it a go. What have you got to lose?
