Would you know what to do if someone’s heart or breathing stopped? None of us ever expect to be faced with that situation, but out on the road—or even at home—it could happen at any time. Knowing how to respond can make all the difference.
That’s why Newbury Road Club was delighted to host a CPR training session on Wednesday, 28 August 2025, at Newbury and Crookham Golf Course. The free session was led by our very own club member, cyclist, and Advanced Critical Care Practitioner, Abigail Goodwin, alongside her colleague, Dr. Jake Roberts, a Specialist Trainee in Emergency Medicine.

Over the evening, members learned the fundamentals of life-saving intervention: checking for safety, assessing breathing, delivering effective chest compressions, and using a defibrillator. There was plenty of hands-on practice too—keeping rhythm to the Bee Gees’ classic “Stayin’ Alive” made for a few smiles in between the serious learning.
The importance of CPR can’t be overstated. Acting quickly and confidently in the moments after a cardiac arrest can keep oxygen flowing to the brain and vital organs until professional help arrives—dramatically increasing the chance of survival.

The evening was a great success, with plenty of questions, engagement, and laughter. In fact, it proved so popular that another session is already in the diary.
Because when it comes to saving lives, knowledge really is power.
