Chilly Start to Wednesday Time Trials

Ian Lakey

Newbury Road Club’s programme of Wednesday evening Time Trials got underway yesterday – 7th April – and despite the continuing cold conditions a field of more than 20 riders took part on the testing B4000 based course. The course, used for the 2009 National Championships, has been a regular feature of club events for many years and tests riders’ ability to maintain the effort on the largely downhill outbound leg followed by a long dragging climb back to the finish. Whilst not the fastest of courses it is a good all-round test.

Graham Morrison

Although open to all riders and machines, the event included the first round of the club’s ‘Non-Aero’ competition requiring riders to dispense with all their aero devices and ride a standard road bike. Four club members decided to throw their hat in the ring for the opening round of the competition with Nestor Patrikios coming away the victor on the evening with a very impressive 25m 48s. He was followed home by Ian Lakey 27m 33s, Graham Morrison 28m 58s and Chris Burch 29m 25s.

Local Tandem pair of Rachael Elliott and Ian Greenstreet

Of those choosing to ride Aero, the top solo ride was Richard Cornes (Newbury Velo) 23m 00s, with first lady Melanie Sneddon (Torq Performance) 25m 55s. Local Tandem pair of Rachael Elliott and Ian Greenstreet (Newbury Velo) 20m 39s were the overall fastest on the evening.

Next week we return to the A4 and course H10/3 at 7pm where we hope conditions will be a little warmer.
